Overview
A new paradigm is emerging where there is a bottom-up push from industry on international space agencies to facilitate commercially viable and innovative applications and services in various fields and economic sectors. NASA’s Chief Scientist is getting strong indications of this kind of interest, but does not know how to respond as a government agency.
French space agency, CNES, has had significant success in facilitating this paradigm shift by merging its governmental agency scale with commercial interests to boost new companies and value propositions that deliver a wealth of viable earth observation, satellite communication, or geo positioning-based technologies.
Furthermore, some of the new technologies emerging from this paradigm shift within the space industry are directly applicable for ocean and water observation and data collection. Globally, these technologies are not only opening up an entirely new commercial sector, but allowing for the protection and conservation of ocean and water health at a time where such protection has never been more crucial. More broadly, this emerging sector, when combined with innovative downstream applications and services, is providing vast benefits for society at large.
Event Details
In 2023, TMA BlueTech and CNES will first host two events that are designed to help national space agencies around the world replicate the successes of CNES in transitioning into the aforementioned paradigm (scaling national space agencies with commercial interests to boost new companies and value propositions that deliver a wealth of viable earth observation, satellite communication, or geo positioning-based technologies).
The first event is virtual, and meant to set the framework for this continuing initiative, as well as outline goals, structure collaboration, set timelines and begin to address some of the below points. The second event will take place in-person at the 15th annual BlueTech Week in San Diego in November, which will further expand upon the following:
● The overall market potential of innovative space applications;
● How CNES has been a driver of this new paradigm using its scientific and engineering expertise to boost commercial innovations;
● How CNES and the European Space Agency are collaborating on the next phase of the new space paradigm and its downstream services;
● Examples of successful start-ups, SMEs andMLEs that have been pushed forward with the help of the CNES initiative;
● How to spot new commercial opportunities and respond to those needs;
● How the CNES model can be replicated by other international space agencies;
● New trends in space capacities and near real-time services;
● How to remove barriers to entry;
● How we can move from a landscape of dispersed international space agencies to a global space community network with a society-driven purpose;
● How to connect to investors.
Events Purpose and Outcomes
● To serve as a fundamental springboard for accelerating momentum toward the “new paradigm”;
● To encourage the multiplication of new space technologies that benefit ocean and water health;
● To create dynamic connections and integrated, collaborative possibilities among international space agencies that serve the previous points;
● To serve as a teaser that will prompt participants to attend BlueTech Week ‘23 for more in-depth discussions and finding solutions.
