The Blue Economy is a rapidly expanding sector that refers to all economic and sustainable activities related to oceans, seas, and coastal areas.
In 2020, San Diego’s maritime, water, and Blue Tech businesses employed more than 114,000 people, accounting for more than 9% of employment in San Diego County. With initiatives underway like the United Nation’s Ocean Decade, President Biden’s national goal of 30 gigawatts by 2030, andSan Diego’s own Climate Action Plan, the need for Blue Tech and Blue Economy workers is growing. This includes industries such as fisheries, tourism, renewable energy, and marine biotechnology. There is a growing demand for skilled professionals who can work in these fields, and educators can help prepare students to take advantage of these opportunities.
