Join us as we chart the course for the future of sustainable ocean industries, leveraging technology and collaboration to drive global impact.

Topic 2: Cybersecurity and Physical Security in the Modern Maritime Domain

As the maritime industry continues to drive global trade, it faces an escalating number of cyber threats, advancing at an unprecedented pace. U.S. ports and critical maritime infrastructure are increasingly targeted by cyberattacks, which often have physical consequences, threatening not only digital systems but also the safety and security of port operations. With the global cost of cybercrime rising sharply, it’s more urgent than ever for the industry to address these vulnerabilities through both cybersecurity and physical security measures.

TMA BlueTech and San Diego's Cyber Center of Excellence, in collaboration with the San Diego Working Waterfront, U.S. Coast Guard and the Port of San Diego, are proud to announce the Second Annual Maritime Security and Cybersecurity Briefing in San Diego on June 11th, from 8am-1pm. This hybrid executive-level event will provide critical insights into the complex and rapidly evolving landscape of maritime security, highlighting the need for an integrated approach to protect both the physical and digital aspects of the industry. Leaders from the FBI, NAVWAR, U.S. Coast Guard, Port of San Diego, and more will come together to discuss the latest threats and cutting-edge defense strategies.

Key Topics to Be Explored:

  • Cyber-Physical Security Risks: The growing convergence of cyber and physical threats in the maritime domain, from attacks on port control systems and automated shipping to the sabotage of critical infrastructure. As cyber threats advance faster than expected, the security of physical assets—such as port terminals, shipping lanes, and logistics operations—becomes increasingly dependent on robust digital defenses.

  • Operational Technology (OT) Cybersecurity: As more maritime operations become digitized and reliant on connected systems, the security of Operational Technology (OT)—which controls and monitors physical processes—has become a priority. OT systems in ports, vessels, and industrial equipment are vulnerable to cyber threats that can disrupt operations or even lead to catastrophic safety failures. Protecting these systems from cyberattacks is now a critical part of maritime security.

  • Maritime Robotics and Autonomous Systems: The increasing use of robotics, drones, and autonomous vessels to streamline operations and enhance security comes with its own set of cybersecurity challenges. Protecting these technologies from cyber threats is essential to prevent operational disruptions and ensure safety.

  • Data Protection and Infrastructure Security: As maritime operators rely more heavily on digital data, it is imperative to secure both physical and virtual data channels against malicious interference. This includes protecting everything from cargo tracking systems to critical infrastructure monitoring systems.

  • Counterintelligence and Nation-State Threats: With nation-state actors targeting the maritime sector, understanding their methods, resources, and tactics is essential to safeguard against their growing capabilities. This session will focus on how nation-state actors use cyber means to exploit physical and digital vulnerabilities in ports, shipping companies, and related sectors.

  • Best Practices for Mitigation and Available Resources: Industry operators will share real-world lessons and proven mitigation strategies, and available local resources, to safeguard both digital and physical assets. The importance of integrating physical security with cybersecurity and OT defenses will be emphasized to ensure a holistic approach to risk management.

The Second Annual Maritime Security and Cybersecurity Briefing offers a unique opportunity for executives, security experts, and government leaders to engage in critical conversations about safeguarding the future of U.S. ports and maritime infrastructure. Whether attending in person at the Port of San Diego or virtually, this hybrid event will provide a platform for collaboration and knowledge-sharing on how to tackle both digital and physical threats in the maritime domain.

For those wishing to attend in person, please note that space is limited, and you will need to register your interest in advance. Don’t miss the chance to be part of this pivotal event!
