We are thrilled to share TMA BlueTech member company, AMI's, achievements.
During challenging times marked by crises, natural disasters, and economic uncertainty, access to clean water remains critical. With water scarcity a growing concern, Applied Membranes Inc (AMI) is at the forefront of solving these challenges. Since 1983, AMI has been dedicated to designing and developing sustainable water treatment and reuse technologies.
As AMI celebrates over 40 years in business, founder and CEO Dr. Gil Dhawan reflects on the company’s humble beginnings. “Without external funding, I started AMI in my garage in San Diego with a vision and passion to revolutionize the water industry. At first, I did consulting for companies, then started building and selling products.”
AMI designs and builds solutions for a broad range of applications, from small-scale to large-scale installations. Solutions include membrane elements and systems, Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO), Brackish Water ReverseOsmosis (BWRO), ultrafiltration (UF), nano filtration (NF), micro filtration (MF), electrode ionization (EDI), and other cutting-edge technologies.

AMI solutions are used in different industries, including agriculture, energy, manufacturing, food and beverage, pharmaceutical and other applications where the quality of water is paramount.
“Entrepreneurship is a challenging and rewarding path that requires resilience, persistence, and belief in something greater than yourself,” says Dhawan. “As the company has grown over the years, we are now in our state-of-the-art 156,000 SF facility in Vista, CA. We have retained our core values of quality, service, and reliability, and believe in tackling water challenges together.”
Notable projects include supplying systems for disaster relief efforts, including 400 solar-powered systems to Iraq. After the war, hundreds of villages had lost access to electricity and people had been drinking contaminated river water. AMI systems produced clean drinking water, prevented the spread of waterborne diseases, and saved thousands of lives. These systems are still in operation today and provide a reliable source of clean, safe water.
AMI’s innovative designs minimize water wastage and incorporate energy recovery technologies for significant cost savings and reduced energy consumption. All electrical, piping, engineering, manufacturing, and testing is done in-house at AMI’s ISO:9001 certified facility. With products installed in over 190 countries, AMI has a demonstrated track record of successful implementations for multiple applications and is renowned for quality, performance and service.
AMI has received numerous awards over the years, including Special Congressional recognition for water conservation, water reuse, providing safe and clean water, and creating significant positive impact on the local environment and economy. They also received the President’s “E” Award forExports in 2018, the highest honors U.S. exporters and export service providers can receive from the U.S. government.
“We are proud of our team's efforts and passion for creating a positive impact on the world through innovative water solutions.”
AMI continues to shape a more water-positive future for generations to come and has been a long-time supporter of TMA BlueTech.
